Ship Escort Response Vessel System (SERVS)
Valdez Marine Terminal (VMT) prioritizes diligent environmental stewardship as a fundamental aspect of its operations in Alaska, particularly evident in Prince William Sound. Established in 1989, the Ship Escort Response Vessel System (SERVS) plays a critical role in preventing oil spills and enhancing spill response and preparedness for VMT and the marine shipping companies operating tankers at the terminal. In collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard, SERVS personnel actively monitor vessel traffic, ensuring safe navigation for tankers through the Sound while coordinating a specialized fleet of vessels and response equipment.
Oil Spill Mitigation Resources
SERVS operates in a constant state of preparedness, with crews on standby to respond to oil spills 24/7, year-round. Strategic equipment and crews are positioned to safeguard critical areas around Prince William Sound, including salmon hatcheries and other environmentally sensitive regions. To ensure an effective response, SERVS must be equipped to recover up to 300,000 barrels of oil within 72 hours.
